Fascia, Soffit and Window Cill Repair on a Cornish Stone House

This job came in as a full exterior refresh on a traditional stone-built cottage — scaffold up all round and a proper look at the fascias, soffits, window cills and chimney before winter set in. A good example of the kind of multi-trade job we take on regularly across St Austell and Cornwall.

Fascia and soffit repair

The fascia boards were stripped back to bare timber, sanded and filled where the surface had broken down. Anywhere the timber itself had gone — including three box ends at the gables — was cut out and replaced with new matching timber rather than papered over. Once the repairs were in, everything got an undercoat and two full top coats for a proper, lasting finish. Some sections of soffit were beyond a straightforward repair, so these were replaced with low-maintenance uPVC to match the existing roofline.

Window cill repair — 8 cills replaced

Eight window cills on the property had rotted from years of standing water and weather exposure. Each one was cut out back to sound timber and a new section of treated timber spliced in and matched to the original profile — a proper repair rather than a full cill replacement, which keeps the original joinery intact and saves on cost.

Chimney repointing

With the scaffold already up, we took the opportunity to repoint the chimney stack, renewing the mortar joints to keep the stonework weathertight going into winter.

Painting

To finish the job, the windows were repainted, bringing the whole exterior back to a clean, consistent finish across the repaired timber and the original joinery alike.
